Assessments

A Ó£»¨ÊÓƵ assessor will visit intermittently in order to plan, observe and assess progress in placement, and to check competence within the practice-based units. The course tutor will assess assignment work within the knowledge elements of the programme.

Entry Requirements

All entrants must hold four GCSEs at grade 3 or equivalent (or above), preferably including GCSE Maths and English. If you do not have a GCSE grade 4 in Maths and/or English you will continue studying these subjects alongside your chosen course(s). At the end of the year, you are expected to have completed and achieved all the components of your Level 2 Study Programme and improved your Maths and English skills before progressing to your next level course

You need to be at least 17 years of age to join this programme.

You need to have a positive attitude towards supporting children in a school setting. There is a compulsory school practice component to the programme, so you will need to show you can work as part of a school team.

You will need a clear Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check completed before the programme starts.

Progression

After completing this qualification, you will be able to take up paid employment within the sector or progress on to a Level 3 Support for Teaching and Learning course.

FAQs

Q: How long will I be in college each week?

A: It is likely that you will be expected to attend college for one part day per week. If you do not have English and/or Maths at Grade 4 or above you may need to attend for a second day to complete these. There is also work experience that needs to be completed within your week too.

Q: What will I be qualified to do once I have completed the course?

A: You will be qualified to work as a Teaching Assistant / Learning Support Assistant.

Q: Can I be employed in a school and undertake the course?

A: Yes you can. You can count your employed/paid hours as part of your placement but you will need to be available to come into college on your taught day.

Q: I have some literacy and numeracy issues. Can I still do the course?

A: This is dependent on your own abilities and support requirements. Every potential learner is entitled to an assessment of support needs, which will help identify areas for development and ways we can help. You will need to talk these needs through with the programme manager and the learning needs co-ordinator to establish whether this is the right course for you. We also offer the opportunity to study your GCSE Maths and English alongside your Level 2 course.

Study Programme

Every full-time student at Ó£»¨ÊÓƵ will have their own Study Programme which will include:

– Your academic or vocational qualification.

– Maths and English Language development – if you have not achieved GCSE grade 4 in either of these subjects.

– Work Experience – hours will vary depending on your qualification and course level.

– Tutor Support – to support your personal, academic and professional development.

– Sustainability – helping you to identify how you can improve the sustainability of your future employment sectors.

– Personal Development Awards – developing six key areas of personal and employability behaviours to prepare you for the working world.

As this course requires you to undertake work placements with children and/or vulnerable adults, a DBS check is required.
